How to Use the Songs
Once you have some songs memorized, repeat them all 1 or 2 times a week at at minimum. We sing in the car instead of listening to something else. We also think of the songs during those awake periods in the night. Filling our minds with Scripture throughout the day or night is powerful. Of course, that’s the goal - having Scripture talking to us in our conscious (and unconscious) moments.
Once you have memorized a song, move on to the next song until the whole chapter is memorized. Feel fee to listen ahead to later songs in the chapter, as long as you don’t neglect your chosen song for the week.
As you play and sing the songs as per #4 above, you will soon find that you know the song. We actually don’t try to memorize them. By singing them frequently, you will find that memorization happens naturally. This is based on the association principle used by memory experts, which in our case is association with music and melody. It works very well.
1. Read the chapter from the Bible in its entirety to see the content for the songs you’ve chosen to work on. Songs provided on this site are for Colossians chapter 3.
2. Each song comes with written music (a vocal part only and/or a vocal-piano part) and an mp3 file. Listen to all the songs for the chapter using the mp3s.
3. Once you have a sense for the whole chapter, focus on 1 song at a time, which consists of 2-5 verses. Learning 1 shorter song each week is a good goal.
4. Listen to the mp3 and sing along. Try to do this 3 at least times a day, morning, afternoon, and evening. If you can accompany yourself on a piano or other instrument, of course that’s great. Put the songs on your smartphone or or other listening device so you can have easy access.
5. Wherever possible, find another person to do the program with you. Better still, form a small group, meet every other week, and go through the songs together. It is helpful to have access to a singer for potential questions or issues. You can also contact us. A great way to go is doing the songs along with a study on music and worship.
